Today, we inhabit a universe where almost everything we see, feel or touch is digitally connected. Storage devices are the very fabric of this digital reality. With a whopping 2.7 zettabytes of data floating in the digital ocean today, it is staggering how storage devices can scale and meet this phenomenal demand. We need to tip our "proverbial hat of bewilderment" to the magical abilities of material sciences for making it possible. The evolution of storage devices in terms of size and capacity is mind-numbing. Picture this. In the beginning, a storage device was as big as a house-234 sq ft, to be precise. Thanks to innovations in material science, today, a storage device is as small as a fingernail, Easily pocketable, usable, and efficient. Let us take a trip down memory lane and witness the fascinating transformation of storage devices.

  1. Punch Cards- The first storage device These were the first storage methods used. A typical punch card held a mere 80 characters, the length of half a Twitter tweet.
  1. Magnetic drum memory- The first evolution Drum memory consisted of a long metal cylinder coated in magnetic material, with rows of read-write heads arranged on the drum's axis. Each drum was 16 inches long with 40 tracks and held 48 kb, the equivalent of 5-word files. This was widely used in the '50s and '60s.

Floppy discs were essentially uncovered magnetic discs, hence the "flop." By the '70s, the floppy disc was all the rage, becoming an industry standard.
  1. Compact Disc (CD)- The optical Storage king CDs were the first form of highly portable optical storage. At only 12 cms in diameter, CDs could store more data (~700 MB) than a PC's hard drive. Data stored on discs were read by shining a focused beam of a laser at its surface. CDs transformed the way the music industry functioned forever.
  1. Digital Video Disc (DVD)- The Worthy Successor The worthy successor of the CD-ROM, DVDs were bigger and meaner, capable of holding 1.46 GB of storage. DVDs came in read-only and read-write formats and were extensively used by the film industry for releases. It played a pivotal role in phasing out the VHS format completely.
  1. SD Card- 64 MB to 128 GB in a decade The first SD card held 64 MB of storage in 1999. Within a decade, the storage capacity increased to 128 GB and grew exponentially every year. SD cards utilize flash memory, which stores data in tiny cells comprised of floating-gate transistors. The minuscule size of these cards made them an instant hit in digital photography.

USB Flash drive- The drive of many names Colloquially famous for many names such as Thumb drive, pen drive, memory stick, and many others, the USB drive became an instant success due to its compact form factor and the ease of making file transfers. These drives use flash memory like SD cards for storing data.
  1. Cloud Computing- The future Storage can now be bought like vegetables in different sizes, prices, and forms. The emergence of the cloud has paved the way for on-demand storage allowing for scale based on demand. Storage is now accessible any time & anywhere via the internet.
